College and Career Counseling

Applying to college can be a daunting process. What are colleges looking for in their applicants? How can a student best prepare for standardized college entrance exams (SAT/ACT)? What is the difference between early action, early decision, regular admission and rolling admission? Which colleges would be the best match for my son or daughter? How do we apply for scholarships or receive the best financial aid package possible?

These questions and many more plague parents and stress students as they peer down the road toward graduation. The College Advising process at Lake Norman Christian provides a three-fold approach to planning for the future:

  1. Campus Visits – Two college field trips are available each year that allow our students to tour the campus, listen to an information session, eat a meal at the school and interact with current college students.
  2. Counseling – Individual college counseling sessions are available for students and/or parents throughout the school year. In addition, seniors with their parents are strongly encouraged to schedule at least one counseling session during the fall semester. Furthermore, during the fall semester, seniors meet individually on a semi-weekly basis with the college advisor to gauge application progress and receive support.
  3. Class – Students attend a once-per-week course during one semester of their high school career that addresses topics including:
  • Career Exploration & Personality Assessment
  • Community Service Projects
  • Course Selection
  • College Search and Analysis
  • Common Application – essay writing, standardized testing, résumé/portfolio creation, interviewing, & teacher recommendations
  • Costs – Applying for scholarships & financial aid
